ACSS is a composite, concentrically-stranded conductor. A central core of steel strands is encased in two or more layers of aluminum 1350-O wire. The steel core bears most or all of the mechanical load due to the 'O' temper (fully annealed or soft) aluminum. Corrosion protection for steel core wires is provided by a zinc-5% aluminum-mischmetal alloy coating. For aluminum-clad (AW) ACSS, consult the ACSS/AW catalog. Choose corrosion protection based on the environment.
